GOAL High School serves a considerable number of students who are learning English, according to teacher Felix Heinz at the school’s downtown Greeley location.
To cater to this population, the school on Tuesday hosted a Multilingual Community Night, gathering about a half-dozen community organizations while offering games and food — including catering from La Fiesta — at the school, 930 8th Ave.
Heinz organized the event with fellow English-as-a-second-language teacher Seth Rees. In addition to helping people overcome language barriers and time constraints to connect them with community resources, the school hosts the annual event to conduct outreach and celebrate back-to-school season.
Organizations including Employment Services of Weld County, Sunrise Community Health, the Centennial Board of Cooperative Educational Services, the Weld County Department of Public Health and Environment, Aims Community College and the United Way of Weld County presented information about their offerings at the event.
Makers Mercantile & Studio donated supplies for the school’s chalk walk, and the school hosted a chalk art competition Tuesday evening.
GOAL is a public, multi-district online high school. The tuition-free school provides a laptop for students to use while enrolled at no cost and with no deposit requirements. If students have internet issues, they are assigned an internet hotspot, according to the school’s website. The school’s latest annual report indicates nearly 95% of students report at least one high-risk factor such as having previously dropped out, a history of suspensions, the loss of a parent or sibling and more.
