GOAL High School welcomed Colorado Commissioner of Education Susana Córdova to its Thornton Drop-In Center for a visit focused on student engagement, relationships, and outcomes. She was joined by Jill Toussaint, CEO of GOAL High School; Ted Del Duca, GOAL Board President; Dr. Derek Staves, Denver Region Principal; and Andy Swanson, Director for Accountability Pathways at the Colorado Department of Education. After touring the Drop-In Center, the group gathered for a conversation about GOAL’s mission and how the school supports students who have struggled in traditional settings.

Success Built on Relationships

Toussaint shared the story of GOAL High School, including its statewide reach and longstanding focus on personalized learning. Since its founding, GOAL has graduated more than 10,000 students and continues to see strong student persistence and academic growth across Colorado. The conversation included GOAL’s progress under the School Performance Framework, improvements in attendance, literacy, and math, and strong outcomes for returning students and seniors on track to graduate. GOAL’s special education program was also discussed. Families across Colorado continue to choose GOAL as a trusted option, with enrollment of students with exceptional needs above the state average.

Engagement, Attendance, and Learning

The group discussed how GOAL manages attendance and student engagement in a blended learning environment. Toussaint explained GOAL’s Connect for Attendance approach and how staff regularly check in with students to support progress. When asked about artificial intelligence, Toussaint shared that GOAL uses a red-light/green-light system to guide appropriate use, encouraging AI as a learning tool when allowed and restricting it when staff need to understand what students know independently.

Students Share Their Experience

Three students, Marley Guerra, Amyia Garcia, and Navaeh “Missy” Salazar, spoke with Commissioner Córdova about their experiences at GOAL. They shared that while they are enrolled in classes with students across the state, communication is limited unless peers attend the same Drop-In Center. They said this helps create a calm, focused learning environment. “There’s no drama,” one student shared. Students also spoke about school activities, including prom and a recent field trip to Elitch Gardens, as well as the flexibility GOAL provides for balancing school with work. Marley shared that she works at a senior living community and comes to the site a few times each month while completing coursework around her schedule. Missy and Amyia, who became friends at GOAL, come to the site almost every day. When asked about summer plans, students shared that GOAL offers a summer school option, though they plan to work summer jobs. The visit highlighted how GOAL’s flexible, relationship-driven model helps students succeed academically, socially, and in everyday life.
